Braemar College student Jordan Athorn is a female umpire for the Riddell District Football League and answered the call to promote equality for women in sport and in particular, the Australian Rules Football world.
Jordan had to apply for the position via a detailed resume and rigorous interview process. She was required to discuss situations where she may have experienced discrimination as a women umpire in a male dominated arena.
Jordan has two older brothers, who are heavily involved in playing sport at a high level. Old Collegian mum, Nicky states that she regularly umpires family conversations around the dinner table about the inequality of sport and in fact elements of those conversations came up in Jordan’s interview.
Jordan aspires to one day become a female AFL umpire, and appears on a big white billboard on the Bolte bridge.
Well done Jordan! We look forward to watching you chase your goals.
