Middle School Writing Competition – Get Your Entries In!


As part of the Stella Prize Schools Program, and our commitment to giving students the opportunity to extend their writing skills, Braemar College is holding a writing competition for Middle School students.  There’s a great prize to be won at each year level.the-stella-prize-home


Winners will be invited to attend a fully catered literary lunch in Jackson Hall with special guests, authors Lili Wilkinson, Leanne Hall and Bec Kavanagh.

During the lunch, students will have the opportunity to participate in the panel discussions and ask any questions about writing.


Bec Kavanagh

Bec Kavanagh is a writer, reviewer and educator. A YA specialist, she was the founder of A Thousand Words Festival, which celebrated young adult fiction. Bec is the Schools Coordinator for the Stella Prize.

Lili is the award-winning author of ten books for young adults, including Pink and Scatterheart. Lili previously managed the ‘Inside A Dog’ blog for the Centre for Youth Literature at the SLV.

Leanne is the award-winning author of This Is Shyness and Queen of the Night. Her writing has appeared in Sleepers Almanac, Meanjin and Best Australian Stories.


The Writing Prompt


It is the night before your final at the Rio Olympics and your phone rings.

Write a narrative (story) about what happened after the call.

Think about:

*the character/s, what sport they are competing in and which country they are representing
*the complication or the problem to be solved
*how the story will end

Word limit – max 500 words

How to submit

To be submitted via Seqta – PACE – Writing competition by Friday 29 July

Successful writers will receive an email on Monday 1 August confirming their position at the lunch.
