Students Love of Language Shines

One of Braemar College’s major learning and teaching goals is to engage students and help them realise their potential. We encourage our students to show initiative with their learning, and take it to the next level.

Vernon, OliviaOlivia Vernon in Year 10 recently explored her love of languages by emailing the experts at OZwords published by the Australian Dictionary Centre at the Australian National University to find out the meaning of ‘gnarly’. Olivia was interested to discover the origin of the word, and whether its meaning had changed over time.

Screen Shot 2016-04-27 at 10.08.49 AMShe received a comprehensive reply from one of the editors of the Australian Oxford Dictionary, and it was wonderful to see her get such a satisfying response to her learning enquiry.

Mark Gwynn, editor of a number of Australian Oxford dictionaries and thesauruses provided Olivia with a history of the word dating back to the 1840s, and details of how its current meaning had evolved.
