Students participating in the end of year Nepal base camp expedition attended a two night training camp at Mt Buller last weekend.
Fourteen students and three staff members left the College on Friday and returned on Sunday.
On Saturday they hiked from the base of Mt Buller to the summit. It was a 17km, 8 hour hike that everyone handled extremely well.
Sunday’s weather conditions were a lot worse with low visibility and rain for the duration of the ten kilometre hike. With the steep terrain and difficult conditions, this was a far more arduous climb.
Both hikes provided students with great preparation for what’s ahead, and they found the weekend to be a fun and worthwhile experience.
Students also learned that they need to be fully prepared in terms of gear. With the changeable weather, they realised that each day when you start out you need to be prepared for any conditions.
Students came away with more awareness of some of the difficulties they might encounter, and the understanding that will have to push themselves in order to reach Everest Base Camp.
